Hybrid Home for Two and Their Dog
Nestled Shells Create a Unique Space in House N
In the heart of Oita, Japan, House N stands as a testament to the innovative design of renowned architect Sou Fujimoto. Constructed in 2008, this home offers a sanctuary for a couple and their beloved canine companion.
Three Shells of Progressive Size: A Hybrid of Boxes
Fujimoto conceived House N as a composition of three shells of decreasing size, nested within each other. The outer shell, composed of perforated metal, allows light and air to filter through while creating a sense of privacy. The middle shell, enclosed in glass, houses the living and dining areas.
Openings in Walls and Roof: A Seamless Connection to Nature
To blur the boundaries between interior and exterior, Fujimoto intentionally omitted glazing on the outer wall and roof openings. This design creates a seamless connection to the surrounding patio garden, making the bathroom an extension of the outdoor space.
Courtyard as a Focal Point: A Sanctuary for All
At the heart of House N lies a secluded courtyard that serves as a meeting point for the couple and their dog. The surrounding walls, adorned with lush greenery, provide a tranquil oasis within the bustling cityscape.
Away from Stand-Alone Projects: A Hybrid of Nature and Architecture
Fujimoto's vision for House N extended beyond the mere creation of a dwelling. He sought to establish a harmonious relationship between nature and architecture, making the home an extension of its surroundings. This philosophy is evident in the abundance of natural light, open spaces, and seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor areas.
