Missouri dominates FCS Murray State in Mizzou's football season opening game

The Missouri Tigers football team kicked off their 2022 season with a 52-28 victory over the Murray State Racers on Saturday night at Faurot Field.

Quarterback Brady Cook led the Tigers' offense, throwing for 233 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Luther Burden III added two scores to the effort, and the defense forced four turnovers.

The Tigers took an early lead and never looked back, scoring on their first three drives of the game. Cook found Dominic Lovett for a 23-yard touchdown catch and ran for a 1-yard score. Burden put Mizzou up 21-0 with a 58-yard touchdown run.

Tigers overcome slow start to pull away in the second half

Murray State cut the lead to 21-14 early in the second quarter, but Mizzou answered with a field goal and a touchdown run by Cook. The Racers added a touchdown late in the half to make it 31-21 at halftime.

The Tigers came out strong in the second half, forcing a three-and-out and scoring on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Cook to Barrett Banister. Burden added his second touchdown of the night on a 4-yard run to put Mizzou up 45-21.

Murray State scored a late touchdown to make it 45-28, but Mizzou's defense held strong and forced a turnover on downs on the Racers' next possession. The Tigers added a field goal to make the final score 52-28.

What's Next for Mizzou?

The Tigers will host FCS opponent SEMO next Saturday at Faurot Field. The Redhawks are coming off a 31-28 win over UT Martin in their season opener.

Mizzou will then open SEC play on September 17th when they travel to Auburn to face the Tigers. Missouri is looking to snap a three-game losing streak to Auburn.
